Natural Weight Loss Strategies

How many fads and crazy diets have you tried? Even though deep in your heart you know this isn’t the proper way to get rid of any extra weight, do you still hope that this one is the miracle you’ve been hoping for?

It’s time to get out of the infomercial-driven market and realize that the real miracle diet is in natural methods of weight loss using nature’s own miracle foods.

By incorporating natural foods and strategies, you’ll be able to lose the weight you’ve been hanging onto for good.

Here are some natural foods to provide you with an upper hand in your weight loss battle:

1. Choose brown rice over white rice. Why brown rice? The answer is simple, fiber. Brown rice is loaded with fiber. Due to the simple fact that the rice’s hull is kept intact during its processing, it retains its fiber content.

* The natural fiber in brown rice allows our systems to run smoother and keeps us full for much longer than low fiber white rice.

* Brown rice can be found in any grocery store, usually next to the white rice. Throw some extra vegetables or herbs into the rice for some extra flavor and variety.

2. Choose sweet potatoes over white potatoes. They aren’t just for Thanksgiving anymore! Sweet potatoes are high in anti-oxidants and vitamins and are absolutely delicious as well.

* Providing many more nutrients than a typical white potato, they’re low in calories and a great weight loss food choice.

* Peel and cut sweet potatoes into chips or shoestring fries and roast in the oven for a tasty and colorful treat.

3. Water. Water is at the top of the list for a natural weight loss strategy. It sounds pretty obvious, but the truth is, we don’t tend to drink enough water every day. Not only does water flush out toxins and impurities, but it also helps in raising the metabolism, regulating body temperature and keeping our heart and brain healthy.

* Be aware that the popular flavored waters often add some kind of sugar, artificial sweetener, or even salt to the formula, making them less healthy than plain water. Stick to the natural stuff!

4. Legumes and beans. The benefits that beans and legumes provide are absolutely outstanding! They’re low in fat and high in fiber, making them a great choice for weight loss. They’re also extremely heart-healthy.

* You can find a multitude of recipes online that incorporate legumes and beans. Take some time to do a recipe search and your heart with thank you.

5. Fruit. Fruit is a wonderful addition to any natural weight loss regime. It provides natural energy to make exercising easier and it’s loaded with fiber to keep us full and curb cravings.

* Fruit should be eaten raw to receive its full benefit, especially the fiber. Fruit juice doesn’t provide the same nutritional value as eating an actual piece of fruit.

* Fruit smoothies are an excellent way to start your day. Even if you’re not a breakfast person, smoothies are easy to make and take on the go. Plus if you use fresh fruits, you’ll retain the vitamin content.

6. Vegetables. Vegetables are one of the building blocks of good nutrition, and essential to weight loss success. High in vitamins and nutrients, veggies also provide us with energy to sustain us throughout the day. Plus, they have very little sodium, so they reduce bloating and water weight gain.

* Try to incorporate veggies into your lunches and dinners every day, specifically aim for dark orange and dark green vegetables like squash, spinach, pumpkin, and romaine lettuce. A simple side salad or lettuce and tomato on a sandwich are easy ways to get started.

7. Eat organic and raw. It’s always best when trying to lose weight naturally to utilize organic products as much as possible. Organic produce is free of pesticides and preservatives and raw foods retain all of their natural vitamins and minerals. By ridding your body of these dangerous chemicals, weight loss can occur that much easier.

* Visit your local farmer’s market and support your local farmer. They might also have a larger variety of organic produce than the grocery stores.

Following through with your decision to lose weight can sometimes seem overwhelming. But if you approach it with a few natural tips and tricks under your belt, you’ll be that much closer to weight loss success!

How to Reduce Insomnia

Nearly everyone will have trouble sleeping from time to time. However, if you can’t sleep for a large portion of the night or have trouble sleeping almost every night, you may have a problem with insomnia.

Insomnia can plague you for a number of different reasons and can manifest in different ways.
You may find that you have trouble falling asleep or you might fall asleep easily, but then have difficulty staying asleep.

When you’re suffering from lack of sleep, it’s important to focus on finding a solution as soon as possible. Whether you’re going to try natural or prescription medication methods, you should be able to find something that works in your case. Of course, always consult your physician.

Consider the following for reducing insomnia:

1. Get adequate exercise. Exercise not only helps your body, it helps your mind as well. It’s an excellent activity for your total body health. Exercise relieves stress and releases chemicals in the brain that puts you at ease and helps you relax.

2. Wind down at the end of the day. If you feel anxious at the end of the day and have trouble falling asleep, it’s important to take time to wind down. Decide that the 30-60 minutes before bedtime is a time for relaxation for you. Instead of TV, food, alcohol, or caffeine, try a bath, journaling, prayer, or meditation.

* Release your mind from heavy thoughts or important decisions before bed.

* Engage in an activity that you personally find relaxing and make sure you do it every night. Bedtime routines are important to overcome insomnia.

3. Valerian root. Valerian root is a popular natural remedy for insomnia. It helps calm you and reduces anxiety symptoms so you can relax before bed. It’s a good choice alternative if you’d rather take a natural route, instead of resorting to prescriptions.

4. Reduce stress. Take time to identify what is causing you stress in life. If you’re taking on too much, consider giving yourself a lighter load. If you’re having problems at home or work, focus on those problems first. You may notice that solving your day-to-day problems will directly help you solve your insomnia at night.

5. Prescription medication. There are many prescription medicines you can consider taking after getting diagnosed by a doctor or psychiatrist. Your doctor first needs to determine the cause of your insomnia. Some prescriptions that may help include antidepressant drugs and anti-anxiety medication. Consult with your family physician to learn more about this option.

Getting Rid Of Insomnia

While you may not be able to get rid of insomnia forever, these tips should give you the power to keep it at bay. However, if you feel that you can’t control the problem, be sure to seek professional help.

The real trick to reducing insomnia is to find the underlying cause. When you can’t sleep, there’s usually something deeper at play. You may have an overactive mind, unresolved conflict in your life, stress at home or work, or other issues. Whatever the case is, it’s important to get the help you need to seek solutions. Once you solve that underlying issue, you’ll feel overjoyed when you’re able to get a good night’s rest!

How to Meditate for Success

You can achieve great things through meditation. But what exactly are these things? The truth is that you get to create the definition. If you’re after success, meditation can help get you there.

Meditation has been around for ages and it’s a great, relaxing activity to engage in everyday. Also, it’s available to everyone in every moment. Plus, it’s completely free!

Ultimately, there are no excuses for not being able to meditate. Some will say that they simply don’t have enough time. But are you not worth a few minutes a day? Of course you are! You should be able to allot yourself at least 15 minutes per day, just to focus on your own success.

How Meditation Can Help

Meditation is an art that has many opinions associated with it and there are also many ways to meditate. A consensus remains around the fact that it’s about clearing your mind and remaining in the present moment. With regular practice you’ll gain the necessary clarity and discover truths about your life.

Meditation is a great way for you to discover something you may already know deep down. You operate on many levels and you already know how to achieve the success you desire. Problems arise when you spend too much time dealing with day-to-day activities and too little time exploring your depth.

Feel Your Emotions

Getting in touch with your emotions is an important thing. It’s not only reserved for females, nor is it something that will make you vulnerable. It’s an important step on your way to discovering success.

When you meditate and really feel your emotions on any subject, you’ll begin to tap into the truth. What is it that you’re really after? What is your true definition of success?

You’ll often hear of the actor that achieves fame but still doesn’t feel fulfilled. You may have also heard about the successful business mogul who reaches career and financial success but still feels incomplete at the end of the day. These people haven’t truly determined their own definition of success and, instead, have chased someone else’s dreams.

Enjoy the Process

You must stay present and enjoy the process. An actor will remain happy with his or her success if they truly love the art of acting. If they were only after fame and later discovered that it wasn’t all it’s cracked up to be, then they may have followed the wrong path and should reevaluate their path to success.

If you spent too much time on your business plans, make sure you take a step back and remember where you’re going. In this case, you can practice “walking meditation,” which is when you go through the steps of your day-to-day life completely aware of what you’re doing in each moment. This may sound easy, but it can be difficult to master!

Your Focus Can Shift

Once you’ve decided where you’d truly like your life to go, you can take the steps to get yourself there. However, remember that you can’t get back lost time. There’s always a life lesson to be learned by the path you’ve chosen.

Remember that each moment brings incredible transformations. You need to allow this to happen and resist the urge to fight change. This also means that your life goals may change, as well. And that’s okay! It helps to go with the flow and be willing to adapt as you go.

Practice Affirmations

Affirmations are excellent statements to meditate on while you’re achieving your focus. If you remind yourself that you’ve already achieved success, you’ll get there.

Really spend some time envisioning your success. Think about what it feels like to achieve. In the same way that you would picture yourself in a safe place when you’re scared, picture yourself in a successful place when you have doubts.

When you believe in the power of meditation, you believe in your true self, and then success will be yours!

How to Develop a Wellness Program in Your Life

March 3, 2010 by 50 Plus

It’s important for all of us to take responsibility for our health and overall wellness in life. If you want to improve how you feel, how you look, or any other component in your life, developing a wellness program is the way to do it!

Developing your own personal wellness program will enable you to fully understand what it means to have a “life-balance” and give you a plan for achieving it.

Evaluating Your Life

There are several core areas in your life that you should review when developing your wellness program. All of these areas are important, yet some of them are often ignored because of our busy schedules. These core areas include the following:

* Diet
* Exercise
* Thoughts
* Leisure Time
* Feelings

In order to create a program that ensures your wellness, it’s vital to include all of these areas in your plan. This is because, ultimately, all of these key areas have a place in how we feel — both physically and psychologically.

Elements of a Wellness Plan

A program that focuses on how “well” you are, should always start with a diet that includes healthy foods. These include nutritionally sound foods — foods that are cultivated organically so that you reduce the amount of toxins that enter your body.

You should focus on consuming fresh plant foods — like fruits and vegetables — rather than the prepackaged foods in the store. Eating nuts and drinking lots of water can also be especially helpful.

* Check out your local health food store or farmer’s market for the freshest produce. Some farms even offer co-op memberships in exchange for doing work on the farm.

Exercise is another important element of success when it comes to developing a wellness program. Not only does exercise help you lose or maintain your weight, but it also increases the amount of available oxygen throughout your body.

The cells, muscles, bones, and other components of the body are heavily dependent upon oxygen and the body’s ability to properly circulate the blood. A healthy, oxygenated body will have more energy, which will make you more productive and generally happier.

* Exercising doesn’t mean spending lots of money on a gym membership. Walk around your block, take the stairs instead of the elevator, or walk through a nearby mall and you’ll see the benefits.

* Invest in a workout DVD to use in the privacy of your own home and make a commitment to use it four times a week.

The next part of a wellness program is to ensure that your thoughts and feelings are positive and complimentary to your life. Having a support group or someone to talk to about issues that concern you can be very productive.

In addition, learning how to manage stress can be extremely beneficial to your wellness mission. If certain people or places cause you to experience stress, depression, or other negative feelings, then it’s important to pull yourself away from them or find a productive means for coping with them.

* Talking to a friend, family member, priest, or counselor can provide great comfort. These people can offer you objective advice and other ideas on how to deal with the stressors in your life.

Remember, you must focus on both the physical and the psychological aspects of who you are in order to be “well.” By following these techniques to develop your own wellness program, you’ll enhance your life well into the future!

Get Well and Stay Well with a Healthy Diet and a Healthier Attitude

February 27, 2010 by 50 Plus

In order for the body to properly maintain itself and stay optimized for day to day living, it’s important to have both a healthy body and mind. You can achieve glorious health by engaging in a diet that’s nutritionally sound along with a positive mental attitude!

If you feel that you are lacking in one area or the other, you may want to change your diet, your exercise routine, or your overall mental attitude. Generally such lifestyle changes don’t happen overnight so be patient when looking for results. If you’re trying to lose weight, remember that sometimes the body gets healthy on the inside first before you see results on the outside.

How To Get Started

First, start with a detailed evaluation of your current health — both physically and psychologically. You should know what, if any, medical conditions you have, as well as any mental conditions that are present.

Do you have:

* A weight issue
* High blood pressure
* Elevated cholesterol
* High blood sugar
* Medium to high risk for enduring a heart attack or stroke
* Sleep complications
* Depression
* Deteriorating health as you get older

Your health care provider can answer these questions for you as well as make suggestions for changing to a healthier lifestyle.

Making Lifestyle Changes

Once you’ve evaluated your current health situation, you should consider how you’ll make necessary lifestyle changes. Setting small goals for yourself sets you up for success as you achieve each small step.

For example, if you have an issue with being overweight, what are some changes that may help you drop a few pounds?

* Common behaviors that tend to pack on the pounds include drinking sodas, indulging in a lot of sweets, eating a lot of processed foods, and even eating late in the day. Avoid bringing high fat, high calorie foods into the house so you won’t be tempted to eat them.

* Join a gym or take a walk around the block at lunchtime. Ask a friend to join you and make a habit of it. Simple exercise relieves stress and improves your heart.

If you have trouble sleeping, take a quick look at the area you sleep in. Is there something that could be distracting you? Watching television before bed — or while in bed — can over stimulate your brain, causing you to have sleep issues. Limit your TV viewing before bed and keep it turned off in the bedroom.

* Stress can affect your sleep. Develop a bedtime routine to enable your mind and body to relax before going to bed.

Change anything that could have undesired results — even if it’s only one or two things at a time.

Change IS Possible

If you want to get well and stay well with a healthy diet and attitude, consider your overall feelings about life. Do you tend to stick with the notion that the glass is half full, or do you think the glass is half empty? Do you play the victim when it comes to obstacles in your life, or do you see challenges as opportunities you can use to improve yourself?

* Each day, think about all the things that went right. Even if it seemed like a black cloud was following you, certainly something good happened. Think about the good things in your life and meditate about the many good things coming your way tomorrow.

The most important thing to know and understand if you want to be healthier is that you are directly responsible for at least 95% of all that occurs in your life. As for the other 5%, there are ways to deal with those things in a positive and productive manner as well.

If you want to get well and stay well with a healthy diet and a healthier attitude, it’s completely possible! All it takes is some self evaluation, goal setting, and the motivation to make a change. Take it one step at a time and you will succeed!
