How to Be Assertive Without Being Rude or Controlling

Assertiveness is an important skill that can make your life more enjoyable, but, unfortunately, it’s also vastly misconstrued. Sometimes it’s difficult to be assertive, or make your beliefs known, while still maintaining peace and understanding.

Assertive people often come off as rude or controlling. This is because generally people don’t like to be told what to do or how to do it. The trick is in learning how to stand up for yourself without making others feel imposed upon. This is a skill you can develop with a little know-how and practice.

Try using the following tips in order to properly assert yourself:

1. Choose your words carefully. This is especially important if you’re going to assert yourself in situations where you were previously passive. Think about the different ways that your words can be interpreted. Write them down and read them back to yourself if that helps.


* Remember that there’s a fine line between being assertive and being aggressive.

2. Develop good listening skills. Being assertive takes some great communication skills. Remember that communication has two sides – speaking and listening. Truly listening will help you clearly understand the situation at hand. When you follow up with thoughtful and assertive speech, others are more likely to value your opinion.

3. Avoid taking things personally. Since being assertive can be touchy, sometimes you’ll do everything right and still end up rubbing someone the wrong way. Learn how to brush off comments that don’t matter.

4. Be humble. You can combat resistance to your assertiveness by being humble. Avoid bragging about yourself, even if it’s in a joking manner.

5. Show confidence. People enjoy being led by people who ooze confidence. If you’re going to be assertive and take charge, show the confidence to back it up. People will sense your lack of confidence if it isn’t truly there, so give yourself permission to feel good about yourself and your accomplishments.

6. Handle negative issues quickly. If problems arise, jump on them immediately. It’s a part of being assertive. Handle issues with kindness and respect and people will remember you for it. If you let problems linger or treat them in a negative manner, people will remember that too.

7. Deal with feelings of superiority. You’re only human, so perhaps you do feel superior in a situation where you’re being assertive. If so, be careful to avoid acting rudely.

8. Apologize for mistakes. When you’re being assertive, you’re no doubt in the spotlight. When you make a mistake in the spotlight, everyone knows about it. Act appropriately and apologize, and people will respect you for owning up to it.

Remember that the skill of assertiveness is something that develops over time. It may be overwhelming to try to make drastic changes overnight. Ease yourself into it and test the waters. It’s always best to think with clarity and make your changes slowly.

With a gradual change, others will be more likely to accept your new assertiveness. Before you know it, you’ll have their respect for the new, improved you!

Tips for Managing Your Anger

Everyone gets angry. It’s just a part of life. However, you can teach yourself effective ways to manage your anger so you can release it in a healthy manner.

When you let your anger boil inside of you, it could end up coming out in undesirable ways. You certainly don’t want an explosion of anger to occur where you feel completely out of control. That could produce some serious consequences for you and others.

There are easy and safe methods to use that will allow you to manage your anger.

Try some of the following anger management tips:

1. Take deep breaths. At the first sign of anger, take a step back instead of having an immediate reaction. Allow yourself time for a few deep breaths. This act will bring extra oxygen to the brain where it’s needed. You’ll be able to think with extra clarity and you’ll have more time to sort out your thoughts.

2. Pray and meditate. Turn to the help of prayer and meditation. Choose the one that fits with your personal style. Both of these activities allow you to concentrate and clear your head. You’ll be able to think hard about your feelings and possibly even release the anger you’ve built up.

3. Use positive affirmations. Affirmations have the power to battle negative emotions such as anger. They’re short positive statements written in the present tense that can help you stay calm and collected when it matters. If you feel angry, tell yourself that you’re calm and understanding. Doing so will help to redirect your mind onto the positive.

4. Exercise. Exercise is a real treat for the body and mind. It keeps you fit and thinking on your toes. It’s a great way to release stress and endorphins so you can feel better. You likely won’t be feeling anger anymore after a good run around town.

5. Write in a journal. If you’re looking for an outlet to release your thoughts and emotions, try journaling. It’s a great way to feel like you’re talking to someone, but you’re still keeping secrets. Sorting out your inner feelings in this way can be a great release.

6. Start a new hobby. Hobbies can help you deal with anger because they’re activities that you enjoy doing. Since you’ll be having a good time, you’ll hopefully be able to turn your frown upside down!

* Hobbies can be a good temporary escape to cool yourself down from anger, but it’s important to return to the situation once you’ve found a cool head. You don’t want to continue to ignore your issues for too long.

7. Just let go. Figure out any way you can to just let go of your angry feelings. Ask yourself why you’re still holding on. You eventually need to learn how to release the feelings because, in the long run, they’re only hurting you and keeping you from enjoying your life.

If all else fails, remember that you can ask for help for your anger issues. You don’t have to feel like you’re alone with your anger. You can turn to family members and friends. They’ll be there to support you in your time of need. If you truly feel that you have an issue that you can’t seem to let go of, you can seek the help of an anger management counselor or coach, too.

Practice using these strategies every day and you’ll soon be happy to see that you can approach life cool, calm, and collected.

Unfortunately negativity can take over your life without you really knowing it. It’s perfectly normal to be in a bad mood every now and then, but sometimes you’ll be so overwhelmingly negative that it’ll get in the way of reaching your goals.

Having a negative attitude hurts the people around you. Perhaps more importantly, it hurts you. When you determine the underlying cause of your negative attitude and take action to turn it around, you can begin a journey to the positive side of thinking.

Your goals and dreams for your life are a wonderful possibility. It may be a difficult journey to get there, but it’s certainly possible if you adopt a positive attitude and take concerted action to make them happen.

When you’re negative, however, the game stops in its tracks. You’re basically saying that you can’t or don’t think you can reach your goal, so you don’t even bother trying. Of course you’ll never reach your goal if you don’t try!

Strategies To Overcome Negativity

It doesn’t matter what the degree of your negativity is, you can take steps to get yourself out of that black hole. It’s not too late to turn your life around. Even if you’ve had negative attitudes throughout your lifetime, you can still change your manner of thinking.

People are constantly working to make real improvements in the world. New waves of communication and better technology have lead to increased life spans and seemingly better lives.

While there are many positives when it comes to modern life, the downside is that sometimes people try to cram too many things into one day. In this fast paced world, stress may get the better of you and you might have trouble looking on the bright side.

Scheduling Downtime

You may feel like you should always be doing something productive. However, taking care of yourself is ultimately the most productive thing you can do. When you’ve given yourself proper rest and permission to do whatever you want once in awhile, you’ll be better able to focus great efforts on the other things in your life that matter.

People that schedule downtime for themselves clearly have lower stress levels. Allow yourself a proper amount of time for rest. Get 6-8 hours of sleep at night and avoid the temptation to stay up doing something else with that time.

You should also allow yourself a portion of the day where you get to do whatever you want. Even when time is short, let yourself enjoy a few minutes of total relaxation sometime during the day to rejuvenate.

Scheduling proper downtime also gives you time for reflection. When you reflect on your life, you can concentrate on the meaning of it all. You’ll be more likely to truly enjoy your journey. It’s so easy to let life pass you by if you don’t take some time to reflect.

Loneliness can creep up on the best of us from time to time. Is loneliness a challenge in your life? If so, it’s good to know that, with the right mindset and the drive to change, you can combat loneliness in any situation.

It’s okay to feel lonely. Sometimes it just happens. However, you have the power to decide whether you want to wallow in it or meet it head on. When you take decisive action to overcome your loneliness, you can have a smile back on your face in no time.

Here are some helpful strategies to beat loneliness:

1. Avoid sitting around fretting. When you think about it, getting upset isn’t going to help you, so why do it? If you’re not actively looking for something to fill your time, you’ll find that loneliness catches up with you eventually. Even if you don’t have the company of others, you can seek out ways to use your time in fun and productive ways.

2. Engage in a new hobby. If you’ve turned to your current hobbies and are still feeling lonely or bored, try to find something new and exciting. Explore a new hobby that you’ve always been meaning to try but haven’t had the time.
